Michael Jordan authors one of sports great comebacks

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Just a mere mention of his name stirs a jolt of electricity in the senses of most basketball fans, young and old alike.

There’s no doubt about that.

Long retired and now sitting as the principal team owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, he kept on making an impact in the lives of others, on and off the court.

On the heels of his blockbuster 10-series documentary titled “The Last Dance” that most probably end the long-standing debate as to who is the GOAT (greatest of all time), Michael Jordan sets another milestone in his storied career.

Just recently, Hir Airness made a record $100 million donation to groups fighting for racial equality and social justice.

Digging up further on his legendary journey, the 57-year-old Jordan, with a net worth of $2.1 billion as of June 2020, also authored one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, according to AFP (Agence France Presse) Sport.

After steering the Chicago Bulls to an unprecedented grandslam feat from 1991 to 1993, Jordan shocked the basketball world when he unexpectedly retired in 1993.

At that time, Jordan said he had lost desire to shoot hoops because of the death of his father James Sr. and wanted to do something different.

He turned to baseball and was given a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox. However, his baseball career never took off even if he showed a lot of promise while batting it out in the pitch.

Basketball is his life. That’s it.

Jordan eventually returned to the hardcourt and did it magnificently, powering the Bulls to another golden ‘three-peat’ from 1996 to 1998.

Counting his less memorable year with the Washington Wizards where he suited up under No.45 in 2001 after his second retirement, MJ played a total of 15 seasons in the NBA.

Air Jordan joined the Bulls in 1984 as the third overall draft pick. His legendary career earned him six Finals MVP trophies, five regular season MVP awards, six championships, 14 All-Star selections, three All-Star MVPs, and 10 scoring titles. He was also part of the US Dream Team that won gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Aside from Jordan, who is also a two-time inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the other athletes who made famous comebacks as per AFP Sport are Tiger Woods (golf), Niki Lauda (F1 racing), Monica Seles (tennis), and Michael Phelps (swimming).
