Pagaran rules CEPCA’s first ever online chess tournament

CEBU, Philippines —  Michael Joseph Pagaran prevailed in a strong field of 101 players to rule the first ever online tournament of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association billed as ‘CEPCA President’s Cup’ played last Saturday on lichess.org.

Pagaran, a former national champion in the Palarong Pambansa and Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA)representing the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), tallied the highest output of 54 points to pocket the P2,000 top prize.

A chess coach of the Cebu City Sports Commission, Pagaran is also the co-founder Cebu Chess Society.

Together with International Master Kim Steven Yap, Pagaran is currently conducting free online chess clinic to all Cebu City public school elementary students as part of CCSC’s online training program at this time of enhanced community quarantine.

Bryle Arellano finished second with 38 points. Antonio Cabibil,Jave Mareck Peteros, and Rosendo Yamyamin all scored 34 but Cabilil took the third place honors via a higher tiebreaker.

Rounding up the top 10 were Ariel Joseph Abellana, Eden Diano, Rolzon Roullo, National Master Rommel Ganzon, and Ruel Nuttal.

The top 3 Cepcans were Antonio Cabibil, Rosendo Yamyamin, and Ruel Nuttal for Class A, and Percival Fiel,Randy Cabuncal, and Richard Ouano for Class B.

On the other hand, the top lady and kiddie (Under 14) players were Sheila Khan Sepanton and Dave Lavandero, respectively.
