Best Bicycles are at VELO EXPO

ALLEZ - Jose Vicente ‘JV’ Araneta - The Freeman

If you ride, love, and admire bicycles, then you should be at the ballroom of the Cebu Grand Hotel today for the 2019 VELO EXPO.

The VELO EXPO is the brainchild of Arch. Michael Flores, who has been putting this event up for the past five years. It’s a showcase and a celebration of the country’s best bicycles, bicycles that bicycle owners would love to share with the public.

I know that you’re going to say that there are a lot of bicycles out there that are better than those being shown but unless they are being  exhibited in public, then they don’t count.

I was riding out today with friend of mine and he told me that he had a case of bicycle burnout and that he’d scale down his activities until further notice. Fortunately for me, I have never felt that feeling of boredom and looking for another sport to rekindle the fire.

For those who have lost a bit  (you never lose not completely) of cycling in them, the VELO EXPO is just the right event to get the juices flowing. The Expo is not just about road bicycles but a show for all kinds of bicycles. A number of entries from Manila brought with them “boutique” boutique bike brands like Festka, Bastione, Passoni, Pegoretti, Eriksen- to name a few. Exhibitors are from all over the country- Manila, Leyte, Negros and Mindanao will be there to strut there beloved steeds. If there is a local bicycle build I’d love to see, it would be One Rodriguez’s Lightweight. I would never do justice to the bicycle if I describe it here, you have to be there to see it in the flesh to appreciate it.

There will also be a contest on the lightest and the best looking classic bicycles. The categories include road, MTB, single speed, fat bikes, low rider etc. Unlike other expo’s, you can touch, lift and kiss the bicycles, you just can’t ride it.

Of course, the local bicycle brand, VELLUM, will also be present.

Spend you weekend with a feast of the eyes! See you tomorrow at the Cebu Grand Hotel along Escario Street.

Finally, there will be a bicycle road race this coming December 8, 2019 in Baybay, Leyte. I got an invitation from Nestor Sy, Jr, a good friend of mine, to join the event. Well, if there’s a bicycle race that I won’t turn down, it’s any race in Leyte. Leyte boasts of well paved roads and very minimal traffic. The race starts in Baybay and goes south to HJilongos before turning back to Baybay and finish at this dreaded and very steep, explosive climb, although very short, at the newly opened Diversion Road.

There will be plenty of categories so, you can easily race with somebody your age.
