SWU completes 3-peat
CEBU, Philippines — The Southwestern University-Phinma spikers outlasted the University of San Carlos to fulfill their grand slam dream in the 19th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball tournament the other night at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym.
SWU sealed a rare grand slam feat in the collegiate division in four sets, 25-27, 25-17,25-21, 25-18.
USC tried its best to keep its championship hopes alive but SWU’s ace player Mark Kevin Petancio was too much for USC’s defense. It was a sweet victory for Petancio, who also bagged his fourth MVP trophy.
Aside from Petancio, SWU also benefited from the impressive plays from Nilo Jasmin, Mariel Canumay and Raul Consad.
“Gusto gyud ni namo makuha ang three-peat kay ang uban back-to-back ra gyud kutob. I was not expecting for another MVP award because mas importante nako ang championship and I am happy we did it. We are thankful for SWU’s support,” said Petancio, who also bagged the best setter plum.
Two of the other graduating Cobras also nabbed special awards with Canumay named as the first best outside spiker, Jasmin as the first best middle blocker and Rafols as the best opposite hitter.
USC’s Anthony Ekwenugo took home the second best middle blocker award as teammate Jerie Joseph Pingoy was hailed best libero. USPF’s Barbie Imperial got the best outside spiker award.
