USC-NABC Mayor’s Cup:99ers, 1985 Legends on cusp of back-to-back titles

Associated Press

CEBU, Philippines — Team 99ers and the 1985 Legends both placed themselves on the right course for back-to-back titles after drawing first blood in their respective best-of-three division finals in the University of San Carlos-North Alumni Basketball Conference (USC-NABC) Cebu City Mayor’s Cup at the USC-North Campus gym.

The Legends, banking on Lou Regidor’s triple-double show, are on the cusp of seniors division crown after thrashing the 1998 Barako, 69-54, while the 99ers also moved one step away from clinching back-to-back championships after escaping past the 1998 Sipat, 80-76, in the opener of Division 1 finale.

Regidor sparked the Legends’ assault with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Fritz Villamor led the 99ers’ charge with his sterling double-double performance of 31 points and 12 rebounds.

On the other hand, the 2002B Goats and the 2015 Samurais also needed one more victory to taste the sweet nectar of championship success.

The Goats tripped the Dos Mil Uno Shipmen, 70-59, to gain a 1-0 headstart in the Division 2 finals, while the Samurais chopped down the 2013 District, 84-59, to jump on the brink of Division 3 crown.

Joel Dinawanao paced the Goats with 10 points, eight rebounds and one assist while Dejoe Taytayan piled up 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in an all-around hardcourt brilliance for the Samurais.EBV
