CEBU, Philippines — Two nights after winning his first ever belt, unbeaten Cebuano boxer Rey “The Future” Caitom doesn’t want to rest on his laurels as he trains his sights next on a world title bout.

The 33-year-old Caitom, a five-time national amateur champion and one of the brightest stars during his stint with Cebu’s world-renowed ALA Gym, came out of a 12-year layoff in pursuit of his dream to become a world champion.

Caitom moved closer towards accomplishing his mission after he scored a spectacular second round stoppage of Indonesian Frans Damur Palue to capture the WBC Asia Boxing Council Continental minimumweight crown in the co-main event of the Singapore Fighting Championship 8:Renegades of the Fight last Saturday night at the Foowchow Building in Singapore.

It was Caitom’s third straight victory since his ring return after nearly two decades of absence, stretching his perfect run to 9-0-1 now packed with 4KOs.

“I’m so happy that I am now nearing my goal. My recent victory motivated me to strive even harder because I really want to become a world champion. That’s the very reason why I come back to pro boxing,” said Caitom in a press conference yesterday at the Port Seafood Restaurant.

“I would like to thank all those who supported in this fight, AKE International, TSW Technologies, Panalay Tailoring in Cebu, WOH HUP Company, my mentor Neil Yong, my training gym Juggernaut Fight Club and my promoter/coach Arvind Lalwani, who gave me this opportunity,” added Caitom.

Now, the fighting pride of Mandaue yearns for a world championship bout.

“There is a standing offer for me to fight for the vacant WBF (World Boxing Federation) title,” said Caitom, who is promoted and coached by Arvind Lawlani of the Juggernaut Fight Club. “If plans don’t miscarry, it will take place most likely in the second week of December.”

Caitom’s ultimate goal, however, is to challenge either of the three reigning world champions in his division - Wanheng Menayothin (WBC) and Thammanoon Niyomtrong (WBA) both of Thailand, and Wilfredo Mendez (WBO) of Puerto Rico.

“I don’t care wherever the match will be held. As long as it’s a world title fight, I’ll take it anytime, anywhere,” said Caitom. (FREEMAN)
