Hua Ching padders shine in 28th Erne Jawad tablenetfest

CEBU, Philippines — The spirited paddlers of Hua Ching Foundation took home a double victory in the team event of the 28th Erne Jawad Memorial Table Tennis Championship at Robinsons Galleria Cebu yesterday.

Hua Ching topped the men’s and boys 18 divisions amid a strong field of opposition.

Hua Ching overpowered the Table Tennis Association for National Development (TATAND), 2-0, in the men’s final.

Zoren Mendiola won the first singles against Alexis Bolante,9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 14-12,

8-11. He then teamed up with Dannel Jay Tormis to finish off the battle with a 9-11, 11-9, 11-2, 9-11, 11-8 win over Bolante and Dino Marcelo.

In the boys 19, Hua Ching also posted a 2-0 triumph over the University of Cebu (UC) Team A.

Rod Garcia first survived a five-set thriller over Edan Cabaluna, 8-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7. Moments later, he and James Tampus sealed their bid by crushing Jebb Datahan and Justine Jimenez, 11-9, 11-9, 11-13, 12-10.

UC did no go home empty-handed though as it bested Hua CHing to claim the boys 13 title.

UC lost the first singles as Joaquin Holgado bowed to Jebb Datahan, 3-11, 7-11, 6-11, but  Gabriel Misa and Arian Caballes evened the match by winning against Mark Aguilar and Datahan, 10- 12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.

In the decider, Caballes edged John Denver Labrador, 11-5, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4 to produce the gold medal for UC.

The women’s crown was snared by the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) after it bested Lopue’s Table Tennis Association (LOPTTA), 2-0.

UST’s Sherlyn Love Gabisay overcame a five-set match against LOPTTA’s top player Marell Lagunday, 11-7, 12-14, 11-5, 9-11, 11-4, while her teammates Emery Faith Digamon and Leigh Erika Villanueva swepttheir game against Mariella Mabaquao and Micah Tanate, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.

The other winners were Neka Therese Daguia, Trexie Alarcon and Alliyah Yanson of Team Altrust (girls 13), and Althea Gudes and Aizel Rom of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (girls 18). (FREEMAN)
