CEBU, Philippines — The cream of the crop in Cebu chess scene, from the upstarts to rising stars and veterans, will test each other’s mettle in the first ever Cebu Chess Society Cup set to kick off on Saturday, July 6, at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Grandmaster candidate Kim Steven Yap and National Masters Merben Roque and Edsel Montoya lead the cast of strong contenders in the elite open division.

Expected to give them a run for their money are the likes of  Diego Abraham Caparino, Rommel Ganzon, Ernie Abanco, Anthony Makinano, Allan Pason, Ronald Ganzon, Jayson Salubre, Allan Salientes, Bryle Arellano, Jerish John Velarde and Chris Aldritz Pondoyo.

In the 16 Under age group, the topseeds are Jave Mareck Peteros, John Lester Belano, Arje Villarin, Remegio Galenzoga III, Regibna Quinanola, Marian Calimbo, Jervy Villarin, Andre Cardosa, Mary Margarett Quinanola and Edelyn Vosotros.

The young guns to watch out for in the Under 12 category are Ghian Michael Aleria, Sean Keanneth Cogonon, Kristina Concepcion Belano, Jecuambs Cuambot, Justin Luis Joseph, Spica Gonzales, Jay Harvey Camuin, Jude Lorenzo Aranaydo, and Hannah Lynne Jumao-as.

On the other hand, Keith Adriane Ilar, Nina Therese Cabarles, Blair John Serbise, John Jacob Pane, Jelleone Alsola, Loisse Antonette Lozada, Ghislaine Allosada, Adrian Aldava, Ana Nichol Gulben, and Nina de la Torre are the top-ranked entries in the Under 9 class.

Over P70,000 in cash prize will be given away to the winners in all categories of the 9-round Swiss system competition that will run for two days.

The champion in the open division will take home P10,000, while second to fifth will get P7,000, P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

The top five finishers in the 16 Under will pocket P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,500 and P1,000, while the winners in the Under 9 and Under 12 age-groups will receive a uniform prize of P3,000, P2,000, P1,500, P1,000 and P700. (FREEMAN)
