Deluge of young athletes to join CCSC summer sports camp

CEBU, Philippines — About 10,000 young aspiring athletes are expected to take part in the free Summer Grassroots Sports Training Program of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) set to kick off on April 10 in different venues.

CCSC chairman Edward Hayco said this endeavor is their way to cast potential athletes that would represent the city in the national games.

"Summer grassroots workshop will also become an entry point for school for sports program where an entire section of grade and high school will be dedicated to athletes to be trained for Palaro," Hayco said.

The program, which is now on its eight year, features 26 sporting disciplines.

These are archery, air rifle, arnis, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, muay thai, dancesports, futsal, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencak silat, scrabble, sepak takraw, softball, baseball, table tennis, taekwondo, touch rugby, track and field, volleyball, weightlifting, wushu and gymnastics.

The month-long clinic is open to kids ranging from six to 18 years old.

CCSC has acquired about 800 volunteers composed of student-athletes, varsity players and coaches to facilitate the training.

Interested parties may visit these training venues in the North and South districts.

North District schools include the Cebu City Central School, Hipodromo Elementary School, Lahug Elementary School, Mabolo Elementary School, Tejero Elementary School, Zapatera Elementary School, Bo. Luz Elementary School and Talamban Elementary School.

In the South are Don Vicente Rama Memorial, Elementary School Gym, Pardo Elementary School, Mambaling Elementary School, Labangon Elementary School, Punta Princesa Elementary School, Guadalupe Elementary School, Inayawan Elementary School, San Nicolas Elementary School, Opra Elementary School, Tisa Elementary School, and Cebu City Sports Institute.
