Visayas leg of Batang Pinoy unfurls today

CEBU, Philippines —  The Visayas leg of the Batang Pinoy, the government’s annual multi-sports meet, fires off today at the Iloilo City Sports Complex.

 

No less than Philippine Sports Commission chairman William “Butch” Ramirez and Commissioner Ramon Fernandez will grace the event.

From Cebu alone, there are eight teams from different local government units. Defending champion Cebu City leads the pack together with Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Cebu Province, Bogo, Danao, San Fernando and Consolacion.

Challenging the Cebu teams are Bohol, Antique, Negros Occidental and Oriental, Leyte and host team Iloilo.

Some of the athletes competing have just saw action in the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVIRAA) in Dumaguete City and they have two days to recharge before action begins tomorrow.

Centerpiece track and field and medal-rich swimming are the two of the sporting disciplines to be played in this weeklong meet.

The other disciplines to be contested are archery, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, dancesport, karatedo, muay thai, pencak silat, sepak takraw, tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and tennis.
