All eyes on Cebu Niños as CVIRAA opens this Sunday

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Perennial champion Cebu City Niños begin their quest for another overall supremacy in the 2019 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet this Sunday in Dumaguete City.

Cebu City is fielding in close to 900 athletes in the region’s qualifying for the prestigious Palarong Pambansa in Davao City on May.

The first batch composed of 704 athletes, coaches, chaperones and some delegation officials sailed last night while the next batch will follow tonight.

DepEd-Cebu City division sports coordinator Gerome Misa said that Niños are joining all events in the annual multi-sporting events except for wushu.

Defending its title is no longer a matter of interest for Cebu City. The bigger issue rests on how it will produce top-grade athletes capable of representing Central Visayas in Palaro.

The Niños harvested 114 gold, 69 silver and 80 bronze medals last year.

More are expected from them especially with the full implementation of its school-for-sports program.

Meanwhile, Cebu Province, Lapu-Lapu City, Negros Oriental and host Dumaguete City are also expected to beef up their line-up.
