SHS-AdC rules CESAFI football anew

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu successfully reclaimed the secondary boys division title after a thrilling 1-0 victory over University of San Jose Recoletos in the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) football finals yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

After failing to win the crown last year, SHS-Ateneo booters made sure they’ll get their fourth CESAFI title this time. They won their last championship two years ago.

Leo Maquiling was the hero for SHS-AdC with a goal from a free kick in the 79th minute.

It was an intense battle before Maquiling’s goal as the two teams showed that they were hungry for the championship.

SHS-Ateneo launched a lot of attacks in the first half but the Josenians prevented the former in scoring a goal, but In the second half, one of USJ-R’s player made a costly foul that gave Maquiling a chance to score direct from a free-kick right outside the box.

Interestingly, Maquiling, who was hailed as MVP, was also the one who delivered for SHS-Ateneo to win the title in 2016.

Maquiling also got the top scorer award while teammates Pomeroy John Veloso was named the best midfielder while John Francis Zambrano and USJ-R’s Januar Villarin were hailed as best goal keeper and best defender.

Earlier, Don Bosco Technology College ended their campaign with a bronze upending University of San Carlos-BED, 5-2 via shootout.
