Glorietta Lariosa - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Over a hundred word wizards and pawnpushers from all over Cebu will test each other's mettle as the 5th Roger Abella Memorial Open Chess and Scrabble Tournament gets underway today at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

"All is set for the chess and scrabble tourney. We're expecting more than a hundred participants from different schools and universities and professional players," said Marilyn Abella of the organizing Cebu Scrabble Association.

Following a 7-round Swiss system format, the chess tilt features the kiddies, ladies and open division.

The scrabble competition, on the other hand, will have the elementary, high school and professional categories.

Cash prizes, trophies and medals will be given away to the winners.

Spearheaded by the Cebu Scrabble Association in partnership with the Cebu City Sports Commission, Robinsons Galleria Cebu and Department of Education-Cebu City Division, the one-day event  is staged in memory of the late national chess master and Cebu Sports Hall of Famer Roger T. Abella.
