'Idol 4' boxing series Landero vows to stun Jerusalem

Lemuel P. Maglinte - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Embracing his underdog status, two-time world title challenger Toto ‘Muscovado’ Landero (10-3, 2KOs) vowed to upset Melvin ‘Gringo’ Jerusalem (13-2, 8KOs) in the main event of ‘IDOL 4’ boxing series tomorrow night at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.

The 23-year-old Landero said he is even ecstatic after being labeled as the less favored fighter against the ALA Gym stalwart.

“It is always satisfying for me to be an underdog. I am used to it and it’s nice because there is no pressure in my part. It also gives me more inspiration to win,” said Landero in a press conference yesterday at the Abuhan restaurant.

For sure, Jerusalem will have a tough time against Landero, who is best remembered for stunning former world title challenger Vic Saludar last year at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Jerusalem’s trainer Edito Villamor admitted that they took a big risk in pitting their boxer against Landero, who already fought for the world title twice.

The pride of Muntinlupa City challenged Thammanoon Niyomtrong for the WBA title last March but lost via decision. He then faced African Simphiwe Khonco for the IBF belt last July but again faltered via unanimous decision.

“This is a dangerous fight for Melvin but he needs this because we will see if he is ready for another shot at the world title,” said Villamor.

Jerusalem, who is currently ranked No.4 by the World Boxing Council, is hoping for a rematch against Thai superstar Wahneng Menayothin.

Jerusalem fought against Menayothin last year in Thailand for the WBC minimumweight title but lost via unanimous decision.

“I am aiming for an impressive win to show that I have improved a lot. I want to face him (Menayothin) again. I believe I can beat him if we’ll have a rematch in the future,” said Jerusalem.
