CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters shoot for a six-game sweep when they take on the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers at the close of the first round of elimination in the collegiate division of the 18th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum today.

After outlasting the two-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last Saturday, the Webmasters sit comfortably on top of the standings with an immaculate 5-0 slate.

The Webmasters are itching to stay perfect, but they must be extra careful against the rejuvenated Panthers in their 6:45 p.m. encounter.

With a 4-1 win-loss record, the Panthers have somehow earned a certain measure of respect from their rivals. In stark contrast to their previous tag as whipping boys, the Panthers proved to be a force to reckon with in the league this time.

The Panthers, however, face a tall order against the Webmasters, who are powered by an explosive 6-foot-7 Cameroonian import in Frederick Elombi and a lethal four-guard lineup in Darell Shane Menina, Paul Galinato, John Calvin Jabello, and Justine Dacalos.

UC coach Yayoy Alcoseba also has Joven Tagudin, Peter Paul Codilla, Dave Peligrino, Marc Obado, and Fernando Abapo at his disposal.

On the other hand, the Panthers, led by Nigerian reinforcement Rich Managor, can count on the likes of RR Cauba, Kenneth Cada, Lugie Cuyos, Karl Langahin, Rendy Sarahina, Roy Quiachon, Alje Mendez, John Paul Batac and Mike Patalinghug as they bid to end their first round campaign on a high note.

In the first game at 5:15 p.m., the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars will take on the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors. The Jaguars currently sport a 4-1 win-loss card, while the Warriors carry a 2-3 slate. (FREEMAN)
