Talisay, San Francisco begin duel for Gov’s Cup cage title

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Division champions Talisay City Aquastars from the South and their North rivals San Francisco from Camotes Island bring their quest for supremacy to a higher level as they kick off their best-of-three title showdown in the Governor's Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under-21 Developmental Basketball Tournament at the Talisay City Sports Complex tonight.

Talisay earned the right to host the series opener on account of its unblemished 12-0 record.

The Aquastars will go up against the tough-fighting islanders at 8 p.m., right after the knockout match for third place between the Consolacion Sarok Weavers and the Sibonga Pillars at 6 p.m.

Talisay and SanFran are expected to size up each other first considering that this is just their first meeting ever in the province-wide tilt spearheaded by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) under the leadership of its chairman Michel J. Lhuillier and executive director Atty. Ramil P. Abing.

It's their time to shine this time, with former champs Consolacion and Minglanilla already out of the picture.

To boost their chances of claiming the P500,000 grand prize, Talisay must squeeze the most from Jay Deiparine, Elmer Echavez, Ronan Briones, Kendrick Abarquez and Keaton Clyde Taburnal among others.

SanFran, on other other hand, heavily depends on its Big Three in the mold of Kenny Rogers Rocacurva, William Plenos, Jr. and Jake Lawrence Gonzales.

Game 2 shifts to SanFran in Camotes on July 18, while Game 3, if necessary, is set for July 20 at the Cebu Coliseum. (EBV) (FREEMAN)
