UV routs SHS-Ateneo to grab CYBL U15 crown
CEBU, Philippines — A habit that doesn’t seem to fade away. This seems to be University of the Visayas’s way as they won another Under 15 title of the Cebu Youth Basketball League. UV thumped SHS-Ateneo 2, 77-38, to top the Under 15 Division 1 of the CYBL Summer League at the Talisay City Sports Complex.
After a relatively tight first half, UV exploded in the second half to nail their second CYBL U15/U16 title of the year. UV took leads of 15-10 and 26-19 after the first two periods then opened the floodgates on the way to seal the win.
The lead ballooned to 54-31 at the end of the third quarter with Selwyn Wagwag and Neil Fajardo combining for 19 points in the quarter.
Denisvee Sinoy took over in the fourth quarter, making 10 points, benefitting from the UV press that caused turnovers from the side of SHS-Ateneo.
Sinoy led UV with 14 points while Wagwag, son of former UV Lancer Selwin, added 13. Uriel Avila led SHS-Ateneo 2 with nine points.
UV had earlier won the Under 12 Division 1 title also over SHS-Ateneo. UV had also swept the Under 11, 13, 16 and 19 divisions in the CYBL’s first conference of 2018.
In the Under 18 division, SWU-Phinma overcame WJC, 46-35, in the quarterfinals to arrange a semifinal showdown with CLBA. The other semifinals pairing is between Mt. Olives School and Punta Princesa.
