CEBU, Philippines — Christian Klent Pondoyo, Reishi Boy Polan and Jervy Villarin dominated the May edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) age-group monthly qualifying tournament over the weekend at the J Centre Mall along A.S. Fortuna Street in Mandaue City.

Pondoyo lorded it over the 20-under category. Pondoyo was actually tied with Jethro Ysmael Caparino, who also finished the 5-round System competition with 4.0 points, but claimed the top spot courtesy of a higher tie-breaker.

Edsel Vosotros and Laila Nadera placed third and fourth with 3.0 and 2.0 points, respectively.

In the 16-under battle, Polan clinched the title with 6.0 points. Jave Peteros and Arje Villarin occupied the next two sports with 5.0 points each, while Marina Calimbo settled for fourth with 4.0 points.

Jervy Villarin, on the other hand, ruled the 12-under class with 6.5 points.

Lynell Henri Jumao-as wound up second with 6.0 points followed by Edelyn Vosotros with 5.5 points and Richard Gohetia, Jr.   with 5.0 points.

Since Villarin and Pondoyo qualified already, Caparino and Jumao-as will take the May slots of their respective age-groups in the grand finals set sometime next year. (FREEMAN)
