Gymnasts continue to sizzle

TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines —The gymnasts continued to sizzle as Team Cebu City Niños hiked their medal haul to 14 golds, 17 silvers and 13 bronzes after the third day of action in the 2018 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet here.

The Niños, who lost a precious gold on opening day due to some technicalities, readily made up for their coaches’ mistake by grabbing eight more golds, one silver and two bronzes in the women’s artistics gymnastics at the Dauis gym.

Euricka Eisly Soronio and Geanne Alexa Rallos got a triple gold each, with Soronio topping the vault, balance beam and floor exercise  events in Cluster 2 and Rallos in Cluster 1.

Euricka’s sister Eunie Ginell Soronio, on the other hand, bagged two golds and a silver in the first two events of the secondary division. Soronio’s gilt came from the vault and balance beam.

Back in Tagbilaran, Kristine Joy Villacarlos prevented Cebu City from a gold medal blackout in taekwondo after winning the individual battle of poomsae competition.

At the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex, Jhuvan Jhen Baculot fell short of his target and just settled for a silver medal in the secondary girls long jump.

In a rather gloomy day for Cebu City at the field, the Ninos went medal-less in four throwing events. The best they could must was a fourth-place finish.

The other golds in throwing events went to Bayawan’s Shaira Omacad and Bogo City’s Charesse Abao (girls discus throw) and Tagbilaran’s Kenneth Inguito (secondary boys shot put).

The track events, on the other hand, pushed through as scheduled despite the heavy downpour.

Cebu Province’s Christian Tigbao claimed the first gold in athletics via the elementary boys shot put after heaving the iron ball to a distance of 8.87 meters. Danao’s Jeff Vincent Suplaag got the silver in 8.26m  and Mandaue’s CJ Gerardio took the bronze in 8.24m.

In ball games, the Ninos opened their bid in futsal (indoor football) with an 11-0 thrashing of Carcar City at BISU Main Activity Center. In elementary football, they posted an 8-0 whitewash of host Tagbilaran.

In basketball, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers-powered secondary boys team hammered Tagbilaran, 87-46, while their female counterparts escaped past Bayawan City, 71-68.

In the 3-on-3 event, Cebu City posted posted back-to-back wins against the cities of Talisay and Mandaue, while the girls team pulled off a 10-5 victory over Mandaue.

In volleyball, the spiking Ninos grabbed their second  straight win at the expense of Lapu-Lapu, 25-13, 25-15 while the USPF-led secondary girls started out with a 25-13, 25-15 demolition of Bayawan.

The Ninos are hoping to stretch their medal haul when the medal-rich swimming starts today at the UB-VDTALC pool and archery at the Dauis Elementary School.

In the unofficial medal count, Lapu-Lapu City is trailing

Cebu City with a 5-7-6 gold-silver-bronze haul, while Bohol province momentarily runs third with a 3-4-1 gold tally. (FREEMAN)
