9 sick, abandoned dogs die ahead of euthanasia

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Close to 10 more rescued dogs from an abandoned illegal dog shelter in barangay Adlaon, Cebu City died over the weekend even before their scheduled euthanasia on Thursday.

So far, there are now around 40 of them that died a natural death since the rescue last month.

Late last week, there were around 32 dogs due for euthanasia but got postponed for another week after some people pleaded and promised to adopt some of them.

While waiting to be adopted, nine of them died; five last Saturday and another four last Sunday, said Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) head Dr. Jessica Maribojoc yesterday.

Maribojoc said those dogs are already very weak and sick under the City Pound.

Maribojoc earlier explained that the City Pound is not an ideal place for them as it is not a dog shelter.

Four other dogs accordingly, are also due for adoption within this week.

With this, Maribojoc is looking at probably putting around 20 dogs to rest this Thursday.

Although the remaining dogs at the pound have already been scheduled for euthanasia, they can still be adopted.

However, adopting these dogs is not so easy as they still need to be evaluated if qualified to take care of these dogs and not just end up abandoned again. — (FREEMAN)
