CEBU, Philippines —  Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan is assured of the support of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia in his bid to become a member of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) Board.

Garcia, a member of MCIAA Board, said it is just fair to give Lapu-Lapu City a representation in the airport’s policy-making body considering that the facility is located within the city’s jurisdiction.

“It is only right and just. Naa gud na sa Lapu-Lapu ang airport, naa gyu’ng mayor diha molingkod,” Garcia said.

The mayor and his wife, Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Rep. Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” Chan, visited Garcia at the Capitol last week to seek her backing. The governor promised Chan to bring up before the MCIAA Board his request.

According to Garcia, her father, the late governor Pablo Garcia, also wanted the city government to seat as member in the MCIAA Board.

MCIAA was created by Congress through Republic Act No. 6958 on July 31, 1990. It is tasked to "“undertake the economical, efficient and effective control, management and supervision of the Mactan International Airport in the Province of Cebu.”

The MCIAA Board is composed of 11 members with the secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) sitting as chairman and tourism secretary as vice chairman. The members include the governor of Cebu, Finance Secretary, Justice Secretary, CAAP director general, airport general manager, and four private sector representatives. — FPL (FREEMAN)
