Public urged: Emulate Rizal

Sanden J. Anadia - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — As the country commemorates the sacrifices of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, city officials are encouraging the public to continue to be inspired and emulate what our national hero has done for the land.

"Dili nato kalimtan nga gisakripisyo ni Rizal ang iyang kinabuhi gumikan sa iyang pagpangga sa atong nasud. Ang iyang mga bayanihong binuhatan, maoy himoon natong inspirasyon," said Bryner L. Diaz, head of the Cebu City’s Cultural and Historical Affairs Office (CHAO).

Diaz added that Rizal’s virtues, particularly his love for country, are worth inspiring and can be applied in this era.

"Usa sa mga butang nga nagpakita og paghigugma sa nasud mao ang pagtuman sa balaod," said Diaz.

The Cebu City government has paid tribute yesterday to Rizal by remembering his life, works and martyrdom that paved the way for the country’s independence from the Spaniards.

The city’s Rizal Day commemoration started at Fort San Pedro followed by a foot march with the Knights of Rizal to Plaza Sugbo, where the wreath laying ceremony was enacted.

This celebration is in accordance with Proclamation No. 126 -2001 declaring December as Rizal Month.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, who led the celebration, also talked about Rizal's heroic qualities.

He also included in his speech his broad target to make Cebu City to Singapore-like.

Some councilors and department heads also attended.

This year’s theme is “Rizal: Alaalang Iningatan, Yaman Ngayon ng Bayan.” — GAN (FREEMAN)
