Repairs of damaged classrooms in Central Visayas almost complete

CEBU, Philippines —  With less than a week before the first anniversary of the devastation of super typhoon Odette, the Department of Education (DepEd) in Central Visayas has reported that most of the more than 5,000 classrooms that were damaged by the typhoon have already been repaired.

DepEd-7 regional director Salustiano Jimenez said only over a thousand classrooms left that are undergoing repair. Jimenez thanked the “Bayanihan Spirit” of the various stakeholders who helped them repair the damaged classrooms.

Super typhoon Odette left at least P10 billion damage to school buildings and instructional materials in Central Visayas. According to DepEd-7, among the materials damaged by typhoon were six million pieces of modules, computers, printers, and photo copiers.

 Due to the magnitude of the damage, DepEd has called on the local government units to help them rebuild the damaged classrooms. The lack of classrooms has prompted DepEd-7 to resort to double shifting of classes in areas where classrooms are still under repair. — FPL (FREEMAN)
