Ex-cop’s son falls with P8.1 million drugs

Romeo D. Marantal - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  An estimated P8.1 million worth of drugs were seized by the anti-drug operatives of Parian Police Station during a buy-bust operation that resulted in the arrest of a high value individual in Barangay Lorega San Miguel, Cebu City Sunday dawn.

Police identified the suspect as Leo James Cortes, 32, son of a former police officer. The police considered Cortes as a high value individual in the illegal drug trade in Central Visayas.

Police Major Efren Diaz Jr., Parian Police Station chief, said Cortes had been very elusive in the past operations. In fact, he had been a subject of police operations several times but managed to escape from the drag net.

According to Diaz, they have been tailing Cortes in the past four months until they were able to book a transaction with him last Sunday that resulted in his arrest. Seized from him were 1,200 grams of suspected shabu worth P8.1 million.

Cortes is allegedly capable of disposing 1.2 kilos of drugs per week and around five kilos a month.

During investigation the suspect reportedly admitted that was only doing an errand for his boss from inside the jail. Diaz said the suspect told them that his boss would call him to deliver the illegal drugs and gets P5,000 as payment for every successful delivery.

Cortes, who is now detained at the Parian Police Station, will be facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.  — FPL (FREEMAN)
