Cebu City putting up bike racks

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government is seriously pushing the use of active transportation like biking in going to work and school.

In fact, the city government through the Sugbo Bike Lanes Board has started putting up bike racks near schools, offices and public areas. Bike racks are built to secure bicycles and prevent from being stolen.

Sugbo Bike Lanes Board executive director Bernard Maraasi revealed that they are also assigning personnel at the areas where bike racks are located. Through biking, workers and students get to save money and at the same time keep them fit and healthy while also helping save the environment from pollution.

“Makat-on na sila’g bike to work.  Safety ang ilang mga bisiklita, pwede ra igaid, nya naa may magbantay sa bike rack,” said Maraasin.

So far, bike racks have been set up around Plaza Sugbu near the City Hall and at the Elizabeth Mall.

With the return of face-to-face classes in the coming school year, the city government is also starting to build bike racks at the Abellana National High School (NHS), Carreta NHS, Don Carlos Gothong Memorial NHS, Cebu City National Science High School, City Central School, Don Vicente Rama Memorial NHS, Inayawan NHS, Mabolo NHS, Mambaling NHS, Punta Princesa NHS, Tejero NHS, and Tisa NHS.

The city government is also encouraging other offices, both government and private establishments, to also put up bike racks for their workers and clients.

Along with this, Maraasin is also expecting motorcycle and automobile owners to respect bike lanes and bike racks in the city and should not be utilized as their own parking spaces since they also have their own lanes and place to park. — FPL (FREEMAN)
