Police set filing of rape charges vs tutor today

Iris Hazel M. Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) is set to file the charges of statutory rape today against  a tutor who allegedly raped his 10-year-old tutee for more than two years.

Police Lt Colonel Maria Theresa Macatangay, information officer of CCPO, said Monday that they are just waiting for the results of the physical examination of the victim to file charges against the suspect.

It was reported that a 41-year-old tutor was picked up by the barangay officials after he was caught in a video molesting his 10-year-old pupil while they were on a session at the victim’s house in Barangay San Nicolas Proper, Cebu City Saturday evening.

According to Macatangay, the suspect would lock the door of the room where he tutored the victim.

“We can say that the child is extremely violated,” she said.

Investigation revealed that the suspect has raped the child multiple times for the past two years since he began their tutorial session.

“Ang ginikanan, gaduda na kay they found some unusual behavior from the child, that’s why by themselves they tried to investigate first,” said Macatangay.

With the suspicions of the victim’s stepfather, he placed a CCTV camera inside the room where the suspect was caught in the act of raping the victim.

The police will be looking if the suspect is an active teacher and will recommend the filing of appropriate charges once they find out that he is a licensed teacher.

Currently, Macatangay said that the child is initially assessed to have manifested trauma.

According to Macatangay, in line with this, she encourages the parents to be cautious enough with the tutors that they will be hiring for their children, adding that as much as possible avoid leaving their children alone with them.

“Giawhag lang sa namo, nga di lang nato pasagdan nga mabilin ang mao nga tutor nga mabilin sa ilang nga anak na secluded in their homes, as much as possible kailangan visible sa ilang mata ang maong mga activities,” said Macatangay. —GMR (FREEMAN)
