Mayor Rama wants Sinulog 2023 at SRP
CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama wants the Sinulog 2023 to be held at the South Road Properties (SRP) and its preparations to start as early as now.
“I want the Sinulog to be done at SRP,” said Rama.
He said the area where the UniTeam grand rally was held Monday is vast enough to accommodate more individuals and the vendors could also have a spot there.
Rama said the UniTeam grand rally, based on police estimate, was attended by around 300,000 supporters of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte who are running for president and vice president, respectively.
The mayor wants the preparations to be done as early as now for the return of the physical celebration of Sinulog next year.
“We should start having a meeting for a physical Sinulog 2023 at SRP… We will be having a beautiful Sinulog,” he said.
However, Rama’s plan will depend on the outcome of the May 9 elections.
Last 2021, Rama proposed for a virtual Sinulog ritual show at the SRP but was not pushed through because the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force did not allow it due to the high number of COVID-19 cases that time.
On February this year, Rama announced that the city is now “open” but everyone must still observe “freedom with responsibility” as highlighted in his Executive Order No. 163 or Oplan Kagawasan.
Sinulog is the annual cultural and religious celebration in honor of Señor Sto. Niño in Cebu City. It is done every third Sunday of January.
The festival has been celebrated for 42 years already. It has since evolved into the Philippines’s biggest event hosting millions for the series of activities commemorating the 16th century arrival of the Spanish fleet in Cebu and the first baptism on Philippine soil. —FPL (FREEMAN)
