‘Chicken bone’ behind viral Talisay brawl

Iris Hazel M. Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Police will file an alarm and scandal case against the 15 young people involved in a night brawl near a commercial establishment in Barangay Linao, Talisay City on Friday which, investigation revealed, stemmed from the giving of chicken bone.

The complaint will be based on the statement of the management that some establishment properties were damaged because of the scuffle.

Lt. Col. Randy Caballes, chief of Talisay City police, said that the parties -- the group of six individuals and the other group of nine individuals – were both at fault for disturbing the peace in the area and causing damage to the establishment.

The group of six has separately said it will file physical injury charges against the other group.

“Kanang grupo (who lodged complaint) gitagaan silag bukog sa manok, unya nainsulto so naglalis, unya paglalis, nagsinumbagay,” said Caballes.

According to Caballes, all 15 individuals, whose ages range from 20 to 23, have already been identified.

Based on investigation, those involved were under the influence of alcohol when the brawl, which made rounds on the social media, happened.

Nevertheless, Caballes said it was only an isolated case as he assured that they are regularly conducting patrols.

“Volunteer groups regular gyud na sila magtuyok. Kadto lang sila gabhiona nangahubog na, ilaha gyud to. Hulat lang magabaan sila puhon. Talisay ra sila tanan (nagpuyo),” said Caballes.

“Ang gibuhat sa atong gobyerno para matagam sila, file-an gyud sila kaso. Para makaapekto man na sa ilahang criminal record nila. Dapat matagam sila, unya magabaan sila sa ilang gibuhat nga nagpapansin sila’s  Talisay,” he added.

Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas condemned the scuffle and ordered swift investigation into the case.

“I saw the viral video and I already have the report from our local police concerning the scuffle that occurred at Southscape in Barangay Lawaan 1,” said Gullas on Facebook.

Meanwhile, the Mabolo Police Station in Cebu city confirmed receiving a report of another brawl at a bar on Saturday night.

“Yes, nadawat na nato nga report but, unfortunately, pag-abot sa tropa sa area, wala na ang mga involved parties. Wala sad na sila nagpa-blotter diri kay nag-settle na daw sila tungod kay kaila ra ang involved, according sa mga trabahante,” said Police Major Renz Talosig, chief of Mabolo police.

Talosig said they will still be conducting investigation into possible lapses in security of the bar before the Business Process and Licensing Office.

The Emergency Operations Center, for its part, is set to revisit guidelines for restobars following what had happened.

EOC deputy chief implementer and City Councilor Joel Garganera said he will be inspecting restobars to see for himself the current situation in the city.

Mayor Michael Rama issued an executive order involving “kagawasan” or liberation of the Cebuanos from the pandemic but he reminded them on self-regulation and to be responsible enough for their actions, especially that COVID-19 is still around. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol, JMD (FREEMAN)
