Iris Hazel M. Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A construction worker was arrested for allegedly robbing and stabbing to death a taxi driver in Barangay Apas, Cebu City last Tuesday.

Albert Torregosa,36, a resident of Barangay Pasil, Cebu City is currently detained at the Mabolo Police Station after he was identified as one of the suspects who held up and stabbed taxi driver, 35-year-old Edilberto Manulat, a resident of Danao City.

The taxi driver, who suffered stab wounds to his chest and stomach, did not make it to the hospital alive.

Torregosa, in an interview, admitted being under the influence of illegal drugs at that time. Unlike his cohort, a certain Junnel, who managed to flee, he was trapped inside the taxi when the driver locked the vehicle just before getting out and asking for help. Tanods in the area later arrested Torregosa.

“Gipit ra gyud kaayo,” he said.

He is asking for forgiveness, saying he regretted the crime.

“Nagmahay ko...mangayo kog pasaylo sa akong nabuhat,” he said.

He said it was Junnel who convinced him to take illegal drugs and to commit the crime.

He also said he only agreed to it so he could buy medicines for his heart ailment.

Police confiscated two kitchen knives from Torregosa, who will face charges for robbery resulting to homicide.

Case Investigator, Police Staff Sergeant Bacalso said the crime happened at around 2 a.m.

“Sigun sa mga estambay didto nga naa sa duol, nakit-an nalang nila ang biktima nga nigawas sa taxi, unya nangayo og tabang, nya nakit-an sad nila ang suspect nga naa sa sulod sa taxi, na corner sya kay gi-central lock sa victim, nakahimo pa jud syag lock sa suspect aron madakpan jud,” said Bacalso.

Mabolo police are still conducting further investigation to locate and arrest the other suspect. — KQD (FREEMAN)
