CEBU, Philippines —  Construction works for the Phase 1 of Carbon Public Market modernization project in Cebu City is set to begin this month.

Cebu2World Development, Inc. (C2W), a wholly-owned subsidiary of engineering and infrastructure innovator Megawide Construction Corporation, said they will begin once they complete the necessary permits.

This was disclosed by Louie Ferrer, chief corporate affairs and branding officer of the Megawide Construction Corp., in a press conference yesterday.

C2W is aiming to complete the Phase 1 before the year ends. Ferrer said they are currently working on securing clearances from the Cebu City Transportation Office, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), as well as working permit from the Department of Engineering and Public Works, among others.

Apart from waiting for the permits, C2W is also conducting a pre-engineering study.

C2W will start with the retrofitting of the current Unit 2, which will serve as the temporary market facility for vendors in the areas of Warwick Barracks and Freedom Park while the permanent facility is being constructed.

The interim market will accommodate 570 regular stall holders, and a space for ambulant vendors will also be found there. No final count yet was provided for the ambulant vendors.

Phase 1 also includes the construction of a multi-level parking structure, which will have about 250 parking spaces for cars and 200 for motorcycles; its ground level will serve as a staging area for e-trikes and karumata, which will help decongest Quezon Boulevard and address the parking needs for Carbon and City Hall.

Construction will also start for the 24/7 Puso Village, which will be a new Cebu destination similar in concept to international night markets such as Chatuchak in Bangkok.

C2W is investing a total of P5.5 billion for the modernization of the Carbon district. — FPL (FREEMAN)
