CEBU, Philippines —  A 14-year-old girl died while nine others were injured after a van collided with a motorcycle Sunday morning in Barangay Palanas, Alcantara, Cebu.

Police identified the fatality as Juana Rhian Caballes, a resident of Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City. Those injured were Joseph Codilla Maneja, 55; Arnelyn Montemar Maneja, 26; Nelgin Rublica Montemor, 19; Maria Eva Moneja Caballes,31;

Andresa Reponte Maneja, 53; Donald Reponte Maneja, 28, van driver; and three minors, whose ages range from one to seven years old.

Initial investigation revealed that the victims were on board a Nissan Urban on their way to a family outing in Moalboal town from Cebu City when they met the accident along the national highway.

Police Executive Master Sergeant Geraldine Veriarmente, desk officer of Alcantara Police Station, said the van was travelling at high speed when it swerved to avoid a trisikad but collided with a motorcycle travelling from the opposite direction driven by a certain Niño Lorenz, 20, who also suffered from leg and arm injuries.

“Naglikay siya sa sikad unya wa niya nabantayi ang motor, unya ang motor nakabantay siya nga kusog ang van unya wala ra sad siya nilikay kay layo raman siya,” said Variarmente.

“Ang driver sa motor kay na transport na sa Cebu City asta tong driver sa sakyanan,” Veriarmente added.

The police said they have placed the driver of the van under arrest even if he was recuperating at the hospital.

Veriarmente, however, said the family of the fatality and those who were injured are not interested in filing charges against the driver considering that he was a relative.

“Naghulat pami kay ang kadtong tagtungod di man sila mokiha kay katong bata nga namatay kay pag-umangkon man to sa driver,” Veriarmente said. — FPL (FREEMAN)
