CCTO wants lesser parking at Fuente Osmeña rotunda

Mary Ruth R. Malinao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) is recommending to the City Council the amendment of the city ordinance allowing vehicles to park near the Fuente Osmeña rotunda.

CCTO deputy chief for operations Paul Gotiong wants the City Council to lessen the number of vehicles allowed to park near the rotunda to ensure the safety of bikers using the bike lanes.

“Kani man gu'ng rotunda, di unta ni siya pwede parkingan. That is a national law. Since ang atoang ordinance man gud is nakabutang man gud siya as a parking bay, then we have no choice also,” Gotiong said.

He said the ordinance has to be amended to provide smooth flow of traffic at the bike lane in the area. According to Gotiong, the city government is already implementing the bike lane at the Fuente area.

He admitted that the bike lane implementation at Fuente is getting mixed reactions and criticisms on social media.

“Lisod sad gyud siya nga area, ang rotunda nato, kay even though ikaw mo-bike raka or even motor, daghan-daghan gyud nga madisgrasya diha kay mag-merging man gud ang traffic. Best way unta ana niya, if asking for my opinion, iiwas nalang unta nato like i-reroute nalang sila to maybe mga secondary roads so that they can proceed with more caution and safer sad for the bikers,” Gotiong said.

He said they will leave it to the Sugbu Bike Lanes Board to explain on how it was being done and how they are going to implement it for now.

Gotiong also urged the motorists to respect the bike lanes to avoid any untoward incidents.

He said the city is now almost 80 percent complete in the implementation of the bike lanes.

“We're almost 80 percent complete of the routes. Gihinay-hinay nato’g implement,” said Gotiong. — FPL (FREEMAN)
