CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City has reported a significant decrease in its number of dengue cases from January to May this year compared to the number of cases in the same period in 2021.

Dr. Jeffrey Ibones, officer-in-charge of the Cebu City Health Department (CHD), said they recorded only 35 cases since the start of the year until May 2, 2021 – 16 in January, two in February, 10 in March, five in April, and two in May.

Last year, the city recorded 554 cases in the same time period – 300 in January, 211 in February, 24 in March, 10 in April, and nine in May.

Ibone said that of the 1,081 total dengue cases in 2020, the highest numbers recorded were the ones in January and February.

As far as deaths are concerned, two have died in 2021, so far, while 14 died from dengue last year.

In 2020, the barangays with the most number of dengue cases include Guadalupe with 76, Talamban with 60, Tisa with 58, Labangon with 57, Lahug with 44, Basak San Nicolas with 43, Punta Princesa with 32, Apas with 28, Capitol Site with 20 and Adlaon with 15.

Meanwhile, as far as the total number of cases is concerned, the drop in infections started last year with more than 50 percent decrease in numbers from 2019.

In 2019, the city recorded 2,930 dengue cases.

“So far, dako gyud kaayo’g diperensya from 2019, 2020, 2021 ang cases sa dengue,” Ibones said.

He attributes the drop to the COVID-19 pandemic, among others, especially that people stayed home during the lockdowns and had more time to clean their surroundings.

“Ang importante gyud kaayo, ang pagpanglimpyo gyud sa palibot. Importante gyud kaayo ta’ng manglimpyo kay mabantayan man nato ‘tong mga butang nato nga naay posibilidad nga adto didto ang dengue nato magpuyo, labi na kanang mga tubigan sama sa balde nga naay tubig, tabunan gyud nato, ligid nga naay sud tubig atoa gyud nang iyabo,” Ibones said.- JMO (FREEMAN)
