Takakura composting pushed in Toledo City

Sanden J. Anadia - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — To help reduce household wastes, the Toledo City government has started training its constituents on the technology called Takakura Composting.

It is a method where organic waste is broken down by micro-organisms that are cultivated from local materials. The method involves making a seed compost from fermented solutions and a fermenting bed. Organic waste is mixed with the seed compost and left to degrade in a ventilated container or basket.

The Toledo City Agriculture Office recently held a stakeholders meeting and demonstration. The activity was also attended by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and First Consolidated Cooperative Along Tanon Sea Boards (FCCT), barangay officials, farmers and government workers.

In a statement posted to the social media page of Toledo City Public Information Office, CENRO head Amador Cavan said that it is time to make immediate action to decongest the wastes in Putingbato Sanitary Landfill.

“Ang mga basura mahimong mapuslan ug makahatag og dugang kita hinungdan nga gipahigayon ang maong seminar,” read the city government’s post.

The inputs from the seminar are significant to help farmers in managing their farm activities. The city government has expressed gratitude to all those who helped in the campaign to maintain cleanliness in the city.

Earlier, the city also established the “Gulayan sa Barangay,” which aims to promote food sustainability. The project was also designed to enhance the competitiveness of the farmers and the agri communities in general. — FPL (FREEMAN)
