CEBU, Philippines — As he appeals to Oponganons to follow the health protocols to avoid spreading the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan confirmed his daughter has contracted the virus.

Chan said his daughter Jasmin, councilor of Barangay Pajo, has tested positive for COVID-19 but is asymptomatic. The mayor said his daughter may have contracted the virus while doing the mass testing in their barangay.

“Posibleng nakuha ni Jasmine and virus sa dihang nagduty sila during the mass testing in Barangay Pajo,” Chan said.

Chan said he also had himself tested but the result was negative.

Residents of Barangay Pajo in Lapu-Lapu City were mass tested on November 12, 2020. At least 15 tested positive, including Jasmin, and are now housed in isolation centers.

Chan explained the sudden increase in the number of cases in the city was due to the mass testing they have conducted in 11 barangays where prevalence of infections is high.

As of November 16, 2020, the city has a total of 2,540 cases wherein 91 are active. 2,341 have already recovered.

Meanwhile, Chan denied reports on social media that the city is going on a lockdown during the fiesta celebration on November 20 and 21.

“Walay kamatuoran ang mikatag nga taho nga maglockdown ang atong syudad karong umaabot nga fiesta. Hugtanon lang nato nga gibawal ang panagtapok ug pagpamista tungod sa pandemya hilabi na nga nibalik na og saka ang atong kaso,” Chan said.

The mayor is appealing for understanding from the public on the safety measures that the city has to put in place.

“Gustohon man nato nga sadya ang kapistahan sa atong mahal nga Birhen pero mas importante kanako ang atong kaluwasan maong mihangyo ko sa inyung pagsabot,” Chan added.— FPL (FREEMAN)
