Jealous guard kills wife, self

Gabriel C. Bonjoc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A security guard shot and killed his wife and then himself inside their house in Barangay San Isidro, Talisay City Tuesday evening.

Police found 30-year-old Floramae Caramat and 31-year-old Sofiolito Caramat Jr bathed in their own blood.

Emergency responders pronounced Floramae dead on the spot, while Sofiolito was rushed to Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. But Sofiolito was pronounced dead several hours after.

Patrolman Eleazar Belciña, Talisay City Police investigator, said the couple reportedly had a heated argument over a third party.

Authorities are looking at whether jealousy may have played a role in the crime.

Sofiolito reportedly arrived at their house past 7 in the evening, confronting and angrily shouting at Floramae, who allegedly had an affair with another man.

Based on the police report, a witness heard Floramae screaming for help then saw the latter running outside of their house. Sofiolito was tailing his wife.

Sofiolito then drew his service gun and shot Floramae.

Sofiolito immediately went back inside their house and shot himself in the head, police said.

Police Major Gerard Ace Pelare, chief of Talisay City Police Station, said the couple had been always fighting in the last four years due to the third party.

The couple has two children, aged 8 and 9.

Pelare said the city police are investigating how Sofiolito got a firearm.

He explained that security guards are required to turn over their service firearms to the next guard on duty as part of the standard operating procedures.

This was the second incident of crime of passion in the city.

Last month, a police official allegedly shot and killed his lover before shooting himself dead inside the police community precinct in Barangay Bulacao. — KQD (FREEMAN)
