Fire leaves 25 families homeless in Inayawan
CEBU, Philippines — At least 25 residential houses were razed by fire Sunday in Sitio Isla Verde Lower Torre, Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City leaving more than 25 families homeless and an estimated P200,000 in property damage.
The Cebu City fire department received the emergency call at 1:03 p.m. It reached second alarm and was declared under control 34 minutes later. It was completely extinguished at 1:57 p.m. by the responding firemen, including 42 fire trucks and 29 fire volunteers.
Initial investigation revealed that the fire started at the house of Randy Torrejas. Fire Officer 2 Emerson Arceo, fire Investigator, said they are eyeing electrical short circuit possibly due to overloading as possible cause of the fire.
"Among gidudahan nga kuryente kay wala man gi-deny sa tag-iya na didto gagikan sa ila kay naay bisita paghangad sa ilang bisita mao kuno to nga nakita na nila nga nasunog na ang second floor, nagkayo na," Arceo said.
Arceo said the fire immediately spread because most of the houses in the area were made of light materials. He reminded the public to always check their electrical connections and avoid using too much appliances at the same time.
Arceo said the ongoing enhanced community quarantine helped them control the fire immediately.
"So far and difficulty lang sa pagresponde is kana lang tungod kay sikit ang mga balay, but in general, wala na kaayo (difficulty) tungod kay ECQ, medyo mingaw, hawan ang mga dalan," Arceo said.
The affected families are now temporarily sheltered at the barangay gym. FPL (FREEMAN)
