City trash down amid ECQ

Alicia Ivy L. Chua - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The volume of garbage collected by the Department of Public Services (DPS) remains low amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Cebu City.

Lawyer John Jigo Dacua, DPS head, said the waste collection from Mondays to Fridays went down to 400 to 450 tons from the usual 550 to 600 tons.

The garbage collection on weekends, however, remains at 200 to 300 tons.

“Stagnant siya mga 400 to 450 tons, except on weekends,” he said.

The decrease in garbage collection is attributed to the temporary shutdown of establishments like malls, food outlets/restaurants and schools, among others due to ECQ.

But once ECQ is lifted, Dacua said, the volume of garbage is expected to increase anew.

“Expected gyud na pag ka-lift aning ECQ, mobalik ang mga business establishments and malls na mao sila ang kasagaran bug-at nga producers sa garbage,” said Dacua.

He asked again the public to be responsible in segregating their trashes, especially used face masks and gloves, for the safety of the garbage loaders.

“I’m asking the public to properly dispose their trash. Ilabay pud sa saktong labayanan ug mag pa tuo sa tarong na schedule kay dili lang ang government but kita tanan mag suffer ana,” he said.  KQD (FREEMAN)
