DEPW asked to declog Carreta creek
CEBU, Philippines — Barangay Carreta is asking the Cebu City government and the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) to desilt and declog the excessive waste deposits impeding the free flow of water from the creek adjoining Sitios Malinao and Ponce 1.
“We are requesting the city government and the DEPW to address the safety concerns of the residents affected by the flooding,” the barangay resolution no. 5 read.
The barangay said it has repeatedly sent letter-requests to DEPW, but to no avail. The barangay said the creek easily overflows during a heavy downpour.
“The root cause of the flooding in the identified areas is the huge volume of deposited wastes that are excessively piling up and clogging the adjoining creek,” it said.
The Cebu City Council referred the concern of the barangay to DEPW during its regular session on February 19.
The barangay said local government units (LGUs) are charged with the promotion of health and safety within their respective jurisdictions. As such, the LGUs should take the lead in the prevention, preparedness for, and containment of flooding. (FREEMAN)
