Most child-friendly public schools award pushed

Mary Ruth R. Malinao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Councilor Alvin Dizon has proposed to establish a “most child-friendly award” for public schools in the city.

The objective of the proposed ordinance is for the schools to aspire to achieve the goals within the framework of a "rights-based and inclusive and quality education that promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all."

"It is essential to monitor and evaluate mechanisms within our schools to look into relevant indicators to guide both policy and decision makers and the schools themselves together with the communities, parents and other stakeholders so as to provide basis for enriched educational experience through which students can develop and harness their full potential," said Dizon.

The criteria in selecting the awardees include academic performance, active community participation, conducive and safe learning environment, environmental friendly practices, safe space and holistic development, innovations, instruction proficiency, participation and drop-out rates, programs promoting inclusive education, and school administration.

One awardee each will be chosen from elementary and secondary levels. A seal of recognition and P500,000 cash reward will be given to each of the winning schools.

The Local School Board (LSB) is authorized to grant additional recognitions and special awards within the prescribed criteria and appropriated budget under the proposed ordinance.

Under the proposed ordinance, the awardees shall allocate a portion of their cash award for programs and activities geared toward a child-friendly environment by sharing their best practices to other schools.

All awardees are required to submit an accomplishment and utilization report to the LSB at least 30 days before the start of classes of the succeeding year.

The proposal was referred to the Committee on Laws, Ordinances, and Styling during the City Council's regular session last week.

Once approved, the city's Most Child-Friendly Public School Award will be held annually, preferably during the National Children's Month celebration every November. (FREEMAN)
