P3 thousand fines awaits Tuburan dads who miss council sessions

Gregg M. Rubio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Tuburan Municipal Council is imposing fines on members who failed to join the sessions.

A member will be fined P3,000, said Vice Mayor Democrito Diamante.

“Mao ra gyud na ila trabaho to legislate, they must be present sa sessions,” he said.

This was shared by Diamante to his colleagues in Central Visayas during the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines (VMLP) Yearend Assessment and Planning at Seda Hotel in Cebu City last Wednesday.

Over 80 vice mayors in Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental attended the gathering led by Clarin, Bohol Vice Mayor Allen Ray Piezas, VMLP regional chairman and Diamante, the VMLP national vice president.

In his message, Diamante cited reforms he introduced in his town, such as requiring the councilors to attend the flag raising ceremony every Monday and penalizing those who are absent during council sessions.

A mayor for nine years, Diamante said this is also his way of strengthening the position of the vice mayor as presiding officer of the municipal council.

The proceeds from the penalties, Diamante said, will be used for donations to constituents asking for help from the councilors.

AID

Meanwhile, the VMLP is set to send aid to their colleagues affected by the Taal volcano eruption and other calamities.

Magsaysay, Davao del Sur Vice Mayor Donnabel Joy Mejia, the VMLP national president, has made the announcement during the said gathering.

She said they are not waiting for any request from the concerned vice mayors, but they are making their own monitoring.

“No need na mag-request, gi-monitor na namo,” Mejia said.

Mejia’s town was also recently hit by earthquakes in the past months, but said they are now recovering.  KQD (FREEMAN)
