5 Dumanjug villages showcase corn production practices

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Five barangays of Dumanjug town, midwest Cebu serve as field trials on various corn practices for the Season Long training on Integrated Crop Management on Corn Production.

The Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas, in a statement, said these barangays are also the facilitated farms of the corn extension workers, who are also participants of the Training of Trainors (TOT) on corn.

The activity is being conducted by the DA-7 in collaboration with the Office of the Provincial Government of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor and the local government units.

Meanwhile, the agency’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program has recently distributed improved goats with grower feeds to farmer-beneficiaries in Ayungon, Negros Oriental.

A total of 100 improved goats and 3,100 kilos of grower feeds were given to 20 qualified farmers from the selected five barangays of Kilaban, Inacban, Awa-an, Amdus, and Manogtong. Each farmer received one buck and four does with three bags (50 kilos per bag) of grower feeds.

Jonathan Emperado, farmer-beneficiary from barangay Amdos, thanked DA-7 for the project.

He said he was inspired to engage in goat milk production.

DA-7, in a separate statement, said Mayor Emarie Agustino of Ayungon expressed his gratitude to the agency for the project.

Agustino is hoping that the improved goat production project will be sustained by the farmers.

Moreover, Agustino has committed to assist the farmers in terms of animal health program services through the Barangay Livestock Aide (BLAide).

Negros Oriental SAAD focal person Bernard Limbaga has encouraged the farmers to venture in goat milk production because “it is profitable and has high demand in the market.”

Limbaga said the beneficiaries may establish communal agri-enterprise which can give them an additional income aside from goat raising.  KQD (FREEMAN)
