CEBU, Philippines — For the presiding officer of the Cebu City Council, the year 2020 would be “challenging, exciting, and fascinating.”

Vice Mayor Michael Rama, however, offered no explanation why he viewed the incoming new year as such. But as the father of the city’s legislative body, Rama vowed that the year to come would be “productive”. He also assured a “working council” that is focused on public service next year.

"I have been very clear about my having to pursue that it must be a council that will have to be more on public service above self, greater good for the greater number... Mao gyud na ang focus diha," said Rama.

"That means the general welfare is the supreme law," he added.

Meanwhile, Rama has reminded the public to be vigilant as they greet the year 2020 later at midnight. He said merrymaking should be done without compromising the security of every member of the family. He said that physical injury and possible loss of life should be avoided.

"New year has to be welcomed with a sense of optimism," said Rama.

He also encouraged the public to "pray hard that no calamity will hit Cebu, particularly Cebu City." He also mentioned that 2020 is very special because it is the year where preparations for the 500 years of Christianity have to be continued.

"I wish all should focus on prayer and bring Señor Sto. Niño always as the guide and the center in everything we have to do... in seeking for assistance when it comes to health, security and safety for each and every family of the City of Cebu," said Rama. (FREEMAN)
