CEBU, Philippines —  At a time of overflowing food choices like Christmas, the National Nutrition Council is encouraging the public to choose healthier options.

NNC advised choosing fruits and vegetables, to not overeat, and to drink moderately.

"Hinay-hinay sa mga pagkaon nga sobra sa parat, tambok ug tam-is and, Kumainment No.10, pagbaton sa tukmang timbang. Likayan ang ilimnong makahubog. Ayaw panigarilyo (Eat less food that are salty, fatty, and sweet... and try to maintain an ideal weight... avoid hard drinks, and don’t smoke),” said NNC’s Nore Jean Delos Santos.

How does one control the temptation to indulge? Delos Santos advised to pause.

"Rather than mindlessly popping whatever is in front of you in your mouth, spend a moment of thinking about whether you really want it, or if it's good for you or you are just eating it because it's there,” she said.

Aside from fruits and vegetables, NNC said lean protein is also a healthy choice.

“Just because you want to eat healthier doesn’t mean you should cut out good protein. Lean cuts of meat such as pork loin are a good source of protein,” the council said.

Lean meats better alternatives to processed meats such as hams “as these are often high in sodium, fats, and other additives.”

After hearty meals, NNC advised going for a walk. The council also advised tracking one’s food intake and to get plenty of rest. Christmas, NNC said, doesn’t need to be stressful.  JMO (FREEMAN)
