Alicia Ivy L. Chua - The Freeman

Cebu, Philippines — The Cebu City Council has requested the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO), the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) and Office of the Mayor to properly monitor and implement the ordinance regulating off-street pay parking.

This after the council has noted that the increasing number of the off-street pay parking areas and the excessive parking fees allegedly charged by some operators have been reportedly left unmonitored.

In a proposed resolution penned by Councilor Raul Alcoseba, off-street pay parking areas within the jurisdiction of the City of Cebu shall be governed and regulated by standing ordinances.

The city has Ordinance No. 2089 series of 2006 entitled “An Ordinance setting standards for the Operation of Privately Owned ‘Off-Street’ pay parking areas in Cebu City and providing penalties for Non-compliance of required standard.”

Under should ordinance, consumers are given protection without hampering the ability of legitimate parking enterprises from conducting fair and profitable business.

Alcoseba’s measure aims to make the existing ordinance stronger and effective by monitoring non-compliance that have caused disadvantage to the consumers of the city.

Under the proposed measure, the BPLO and CCTO are to conduct an inventory of these off-street pay parking operators and conduct further action for violators. JMD ( FREEMAN)
