Dengue cases up in Cebu City

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City has about 2,215 cases of dengue with 15 deaths from January 1 to October 19.

According to the Cebu City Health Department’s City Epidemiology Surveillance and Statistics Unit, there has been an increase of 5.63 percent from the same period last year, with 2,097 dengue cases and 12 deaths.

The most affected are from ages 1 to 10 years old with 43.89 percent. The youngest who got affected was a 15-day-old infant, while the oldest was 85 years old.

There were 1,157 male patients, while there were 1,057 female who contracted the disease.

Of these dengue cases, Barangay Guadalupe has the highest with 167 cases.

Barangays Lahug had 128, Inayawan with 96, Apas has 80, Tisa with 79, Labangon got 73, Pardo had 70, Basak San Nicolas with 69, while Mabolo had 67.

The 15 fatalities are from Barangays Guadalupe (2), Inayawan (2), and one each from Capitol, San Antonio, Sapangdaku, Suba, Tisa, Kalunasan, Kinasang-an, Duljo, Bulacao, Toong, and Lahug.

Dengue is seen as the fastest spreading mosquito-borne disease in the country.  The Department of Health has already declared a national dengue epidemic in the Philippines.

DOH-7 has put up insecticide-treated nets in some schools in Cebu for free in the hopes of killing dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

The Insecticide-Treated Nets are safe to use and its concentration level is low and acceptable by the Food and Drugs (FDA). GAN (FREEMAN)
