Sinas ready to back CIDG after release of Chinese detainees

Iris Hazel M. Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Police Regional Office-7 Director Brigadier General Debold Sinas said he is “ready” to support the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group if called to explain the release of the at least 180 Chinese nationals who were arrested for the alleged online gambling last September 7.

It was reported in a national newspaper last Tuesday that Surigao del Norte 2nd district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers has questioned the release of the Chinese nationals despite having concrete evidence against them during the raid.

“We are ready,” Sinas told reporters when asked on the congressman’s statement.

“It’s the CIDG operation, and CIDG is one of our biggest support unit.. ..we will be ready in supporting the CIDG’s decision,” he added.

Sinas said that he doesn’t know why the congressman is questioning the CIDG-7’s move of releasing the suspects. However, he clarified that they are ready to assist the CIDG even though they have separate operations from the PNP.

Moreover, on the issue of bribe allegedly offered to CIDG, Sinas answered that there was a “verbal discussion” that happened between the former CIDG-7 Chief, Police Colonel Lito Patay.

“There was verbal discussion kay Colonel Patay. But that’s it. Si Patay lang nag-istorya sa akoa, but no set up.. basta sya lang nag-istorya,” Sinas said.

Sinas added that considering that Colonel Patay is a senior officer, he will consider what Patay had told him.

“But as to the investigation, walay gibuhat,” Sinas clarified.

Sinas, nevertheless, encouraged Patay to instead report bribery attempts next time so they can set up the suspects and nab them.

CIDG-7 conducted the raid last month that led to the arrest of the Chinese nationals. The establishment where they were arrested allegedly operated without permit.

However, arrestees were released later after the evidences presented against them were deemed to be “weak.”

After the controversial raid, Patay, who was then the CIDG chief, was relieved from his position and replaced by Police Colonel Rommel Ochave. — JMD (FREEMAN)
