For breaching traffic rules: 350 violators apprehended

CEBU, Philippines — Some 350 traffic violators were apprehended by personnel of the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) during a massive operation yesterday morning along V. Rama Avenue, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

I-ACT Region-7, which is headed in part by Land Transportation Office-7 regional director Victor Caindec, said the violators drove various types of vehicles and committed various infractions. Some vehicles were also impounded.

Caindec said those who were apprehended for traffic violations include drivers who were cited for not wearing seatbelts, overloading, not wearing the prescribed helmets, obstructing traffic, wearing improper attire while driving motorcycles, allowing small children to ride in a motorcycle, and parking in a no-parking zone

Colonel Manuel Bonnevie, I-ACT team commander, said that this is their second time to conduct an operation. He urged the public to cooperate as this is for their safety in the road after all.

Earlier, I-ACT chairman Manuel Gonzales said during the I-ACT Region 7 launching that the said inter-agency group was created upon the instruction of President Rodrigo Duterte decongest traffic in the streets.

I-ACT will undertake intensified operations against colorum vehicles, illegal parking, and illegal terminals, as well as remove obstructions in the streets. It will also intensify its anti-fixer and anti-fake driver’s license drives, as well as trip cutting and overcharging.

Caindec said that I-ACT is doing this for the safety of the riding public as well as the pedestrians.

"Mohangyo lang ta nga motabang ang publiko. Dili na lang unya ta mopaabot nga pangdakpon before motuman sa balaod sa trapiko," Caindec said.

Aside from LTO-7, the I-ACT-7 is composed of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the Highway Patrol Group, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, various traffic arms of the local government units, the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the local government units of Cebu. — BRP (FREEMAN)
