CEBU, Philippines — Acting Mayor Michael Rama vowed to preserve the marker erected at the site of the birthplace of Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. in the downtown area, saying it is one of the heritage sites in the city.

Rama said this in his speech yesterday during the observance of the 141st birth anniversary of Don Sergio Osmeña Sr., who also served as the fourth President of the Republic of the Philippines.

A Mass was celebrated at the site of the marker at corner Lapu-Lapu Street and Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City, around 8 a.m. yesterday, celebrated by Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission Commissioner Rev. Fr. Erik Orio.

The event was attended by the local government officials headed by Rama, who is serving as acting mayor, and the city councilors. Don Sergio Osmeña’s heirs, led by former mayor Tomas Osmeña, were also there.

Rama and Tomas, who are bitter political rivals, did not interact with each other for the duration of the event.

Rama made the assurance amid concerns that the marker might be affected by the ongoing construction of a building just behind the marker. He said as long as he is with the city government he will promote goodwill and preserve everything that the state has as his contribution to honor the “Grand Old Man.”

In following in Don Sergio’s footsteps, he asked everyone to follow orders, to be disciplined, to bring life and prosperity, and to unite for the good of the state.

“Gising Pilipinas. Stop counting of dead people, stop casting of shabu in media, stop corruption in the name of Don Sergio!” Rama said during his speech.

The commemorative event was ended by a floral offering and a parade at the site of the marker. — Dina P. Atip
