1 dead, another hurt in Minglanilla shooting

CEBU, Philippines — A man died, while another one was injured after an unidentified man shot the victims who were watching a cockfighting during their feast day at Sitio Sandayong, Barangay Cuanos, Minglanilla, Cebu around 4 p.m. last Saturday.

The victims were identified as Jaime Mercado Repuela, 43, a resident of Proper Barangay Tubod, Minglanilla, Cebu; and Franklin Bautista, 47, a resident of Ward 4, Minglanilla, Cebu.

Police Senior Master Sergeant Oliver Dacua of the Minglanilla Police Station received a call from a concerned citizen requesting for police assistance regarding the shooting incident.

Based on the initial investigation, the victims were in a cockfighting, when Repuela was suddenly shot by an unidentified man using an unknown firearm.

Repuela was shot in the nape and the slug exited on the left portion of his face.

Bautista, who was in front of Repuela, was hit by the same slug.

After shooting the victims, the suspect immediately fled.

The victims were rushed to the Minglanilla District Hospital, but Repuela did not make it alive, as declared by Dr. Jataporn Vatanagol.

Bautista, who sustained a gunshot wound on his body, was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for additional treatment.

The Minglanilla Police Station is still conducting an investigation to determine the motive of the shooting and to identify and arrest the suspect.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was arrested after running amok and threatened to fire a gun in Barangay Taytay, Danao City last Saturday evening.

According to Danao City Police Station desk officer Police Corporal Mark Anthony Manulat, they received a call from a concerned citizen about a person who ran wild.

The police identified the suspect as Joshua Roble, 24, single, a resident of the same barangay.

When the police arrived at the area, they saw the suspect waving and still holding his .22 caliber firearm, which prompted the responding policemen to arrest him.

The police later learned that the firearm was a homemade gun and has three live bullets.
